Pilot Protocol
Pilot Protocol is an open-source overlay network stack designed for AI agents. It provides agents with virtual addresses, encrypted UDP tunnels, NAT traversal, and mutual trust, enabling direct communication across the public internet. The protocol is intended to support an "Internet of Agents" in which autonomous agents can reliably reach one another with stable identities regardless of the physical networks they reside on. The implementation is written in Go and has zero runtime dependencies.

Problem solved
Pilot Protocol solves the problem of connecting AI agents that run on different machines, clouds, or private networks. Agents often need stable identities and secure communication paths, but NATs and firewalls block direct traffic. Pilot Protocol gives agents overlay addresses, encrypted UDP tunnels, and mutual trust so they can communicate peer-to-peer without manually opening ports or relying on centralized agent servers.
Use cases
- Giving AI agents stable virtual addresses across network boundaries
- Establishing encrypted tunnels between agents in separate clouds or data centers
- Enabling direct agent-to-agent communication through NAT traversal
- Building decentralized multi-agent systems that do not depend on central servers
- Authenticating peers before allowing agent-to-agent traffic
- Creating overlay networks for edge or IoT-hosted AI agents
- Prototyping research systems for agent swarm coordination

Pros
- Zero-dependency design simplifies deployment in agent runtimes
- Encrypted UDP tunnels help protect agent communications
- NAT traversal enables direct connectivity without manual firewall changes
- Virtual addresses provide stable identities for agents
- Mutual trust is built into the protocol layer
Cons
- Provides only a network layer, not agent logic, orchestration, or memory
- Requires developers to integrate the protocol into their own agent frameworks
- Custom overlay network stacks can be difficult to debug in production
